With the course in textiles taken in Den Helder, Lyda laid the foundation for her later work as textile artist. Her education was especially determined by the numerous lessons taken from Frans Megens, Kari Cavén, Philip O’Reilly and Cha Young Soon among others. Born in 1950 on the former island of Wieringen, Lyda grew up surrounded by nature. Regular visits to sheep farms marked the beginning of her fascination with wool. That fascination goes deep: Lyda tested the felt capacity of all 68 thoroughbred sheep breeds still being raised in the Netherlands. Lyda sometimes uses felt traditionally: clothes, shoes and the occasional nomadic tent. Pure craftsmanship! But above all, Lyda is in search of other means of expressing herself with felt. Lyda incorporates materials like silk, viscose and polyester in her work, and also applies pieces of wool, stone and glass which give her felted material the pastoral allure of a Dutch landscape. It’s the electrifying personal impulse that gives Lyda’s work its unique(ness) (felty flavor of a summer shower.) Whatever occupies her becomes visible in her work. |
